Pink Floyd (draft)

Yesterday I spent a good majority of my day listening to Pink Floyd (Yup, I'm a real winner). If I had the album on vinyl I listened to the Vinyl (for optimal sound quality) if not it was on CD (I avoided Mp3, because I'm not a fan of Lossyness when using headphones). Doing this, i decided to rank the albums that I had listened to in descending order of awesomeness. So here goes. The Top 5 Floyd albums:

5. The Wall (CD)- Yes, I put this at number 5. not number 1. *gasp* Shock and Awe. Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the Wall. It has its moments of pure jaw dropping bliss, but they are relatively far between. The whole thing comes off as overly melodramatic, slightly forced, and self-aggrandizing.

4. Dark Side of the Moon (vinyl) - Another fantastic album, from here on out on the list I have relatively few negatives about each album specifically. The only downsides of these albums are that they aren't the album following them in the list. They are all great in their own ways, just not as great as the next one.

3. Wish You Were Here (CD)- Wish You Were Here was one of the first songs that i learned to play on the acoustic guitar. The song has stuck with me since the first time I heard it. This is one of the Floyd albums that is short on songs, but long on awesome. Every track is cohesive and functions perfectly.

2. Piper at the Gates of Dawn (CD)- Ahh, Syd Barrett, one of rock's greatest casualties. This collection of twisted psychedelia is quite different from Floyd's later works, without the influence of Roger Waters, but damn, could Barrett write a great song. The closing track Bike is a perfect example of off-kilter timing, bizarre lyrics, and talk-sung vocals. One of my favourite songs in the Floyd canon.

1. Animals (Vinyl)- From the opening strums of Pigs on the Wing part 1, to the closing (and nearly identical) strums of Pigs on the Wing part 2, this album grabs hold of you and does not let go. Dogs may be one of the best epic songs ever written, in all its 18 minute glory, not one second is wasted or . Pigs (Three Different Ones) and Sheep are much the same. In short, this is damn near a perfect album, and I find very little to criticise here. 5 songs, two less than 2 minutes, 3 more than 10 minutes. Amazing.

oh em gee first post.

I am completely obsessed with the new Sunset Rubdown album. More specifically, the lead-off track, "The Mending of the Gown." Iit has an embarassing number of plays on my iTunes, and though there is still 3 months left in the year, I am predicting a handy winner for Song of the Year 2007. Speaking of which I have already started narrowing down my selections for Best of 2007, and have a large number of albums in rotation for consideration. Stay Tuned!
